6abc is teaming up with area fire departments and Kidde, The Home Depot, Your Local Tri-state Toyota Dealers for our 20th Annual Operation 6abc: Save a Life fire safety awareness campaign. Throughout the month of January,This March, Kidde will donate more than 7,000 smoke alarms to the campaign. The smoke alarms have sealed in batteries that never need to be replaced. Smoke alarms will be distributed to participating fire departments from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware at a press event in March 2012 (date TBA). There are also alarms available to those who need one now. Contact your local fire department.Your single best defense in the event of a fire is a working smoke alarm on every floor of your house. If you've had the same smoke alarm for more than 10 years, it's time to replace it. The Trevose Fire Company also participates with the Bucks County Fire Marshals Office in "Operation Safe Home." In the Spring we pick a neighborhood in our local responding area and go door to door and install smoke detectors and give friendly advise on fire safety. This will be our sixth year participating in the 6ABC Safe A Life Program and our fourth year participating with the Bucks County Fire Marshal's Office in the "Operation Safe Home" program....

What is carbon monoxide?Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and toxic gas. Because it is impossible to see, taste or smell the toxic fumes, CO can kill you before you are aware it is in your home. At lower levels of exposure, CO causes mild effects that are often mistaken for the flu. These symptoms include headaches, dizziness, disorientation, nausea and fatigue. The effects of CO exposure can vary greatly from person to person depending on age, overall health and the concentration and length of exposure....

I know this winter has a slow start this year but i wanted to share this information with you to prepare yourself for the colder weather. Before Winter Storms and Extreme ColdTo prepare for a winter storm you should do the following:Before winter approaches, add the following supplies to your emergency kit:Rock salt or more environmentally safe products to melt ice on walkways. Visit the Environmental Protection Agency for a complete list of recommended products.Sand to improve traction.Snow shovels and other snow removal equipment.Sufficient heating fuel. You may become isolated in your home and regular fuel sources may be cut off. Store a good supply of dry, seasoned wood for your fireplace or wood-burning stove.Adequate clothing and blankets to keep you warm.Make a Family Communications Plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency.Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or other local news channels for critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS). Be alert to changing weather conditions.Minimize travel. If travel is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle.Bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water....
